What You Pay to Get Your License Back

You completed the suspension period. You satisfied the court requirements. Now you need to pay the Michigan Secretary of State to restore your driving privileges.

The total depends on what triggered the suspension. DUI-related suspensions require a hearing before the Office of Hearings and Administrative Oversight, and those hearings carry their own fees. Restricted licenses during the suspension period require ignition interlock installation on every vehicle you own. Insurance proof requirements vary by violation type.

Michigan Base Reinstatement Fee

This is the statutory fee the Secretary of State charges to restore a suspended license. It applies regardless of the violation that caused the suspension, but it does not include hearing fees, ignition interlock costs, or insurance filing requirements.

Why the Base Fee Is Only Part of the Cost

It does not cover the procedural steps required before you can pay it. DUI and repeat-offense suspensions require a hearing before the Office of Hearings and Administrative Oversight. The hearing determines whether you qualify for reinstatement.

Restricted licenses issued during the suspension period require a Breath Alcohol Ignition Interlock Device on every vehicle you own or operate. Installation, monthly monitoring, and removal each carry separate costs paid to the BAIID provider. The Secretary of State does not collect these fees, but you cannot satisfy the restricted license terms without them.

Insurance proof requirements depend on the violation. Most suspensions require you to carry proof of insurance when you reinstate, but the state does not require a filing certificate. You prove insurance by presenting a current policy declaration page. Households insuring multiple vehicles must ensure every vehicle on the policy meets Michigan's minimum liability limits: $50,000 per person, $100,000 per accident, and $10,000 property damage, plus mandatory personal injury protection.

Pay the hearing fee first, install the interlock if required, then pay reinstatement.

What the Hearing Process Costs

DUI suspensions and revocations require a formal hearing before the Office of Hearings and Administrative Oversight. The hearing determines whether you meet the criteria for reinstatement or a restricted license.

You petition for the hearing, submit documentation proving you completed all court-ordered requirements, and appear before a hearing officer. The officer evaluates whether you demonstrate the ability to drive safely. If the officer denies your petition, you pay the hearing fee again when you re-petition.

Restricted licenses issued through Specialty or Sobriety Court programs follow a different path. You petition through your probation officer using form MC-393. The court grants the restricted license if you meet program requirements. The restricted license limits you to specified destinations and hours, and you must carry proof of both your destination and the hours you are permitted to drive. Every vehicle you operate must have a BAIID installed.

How Ignition Interlock Adds to the Total

Michigan requires a Breath Alcohol Ignition Interlock Device on every vehicle you own or operate when you hold a restricted license. The device prevents the vehicle from starting if it detects alcohol on your breath. Installation costs vary by provider, typically running several hundred dollars per vehicle. Monthly monitoring fees continue for the entire restricted license period.

Households with multiple vehicles face higher interlock costs because the requirement applies to every car. A two-car household pays installation and monitoring on both vehicles. A three-car household pays for three installations. The Secretary of State does not waive the requirement based on vehicle count. If you own the vehicle, it must have the device installed before you can legally drive it on a restricted license.

Removal fees apply when the restricted period ends and you transition to full reinstatement. The provider uninstalls the device and certifies compliance to the Secretary of State.

Michigan Minimum Liability Limits

$50,000 / $100,000 / $10,000

Michigan requires $50,000 bodily injury coverage per person, $100,000 per accident, and $10,000 property damage. Personal injury protection is also mandatory. Every vehicle on your policy must meet these minimums when you reinstate.

Insurance Proof and Multi-Vehicle Policies

Michigan does not use SR-22 certificates. The state requires proof of insurance at reinstatement, but you satisfy that requirement by presenting a current policy declaration page showing you carry the state's minimum liability limits and mandatory personal injury protection. Households insuring multiple vehicles must ensure every car on the policy meets the minimums. A policy that covers three vehicles with one car carrying lower limits will not satisfy the proof requirement.

Combining multiple vehicles on one policy typically lowers the total premium compared to separate policies, but the multi-car discount does not reduce the per-vehicle coverage requirement. Each vehicle must still meet the $50,000 / $100,000 / $10,000 liability minimums and carry PIP. When you reinstate, the Secretary of State verifies that your current policy meets these requirements for every vehicle listed. A policy declaration page that shows insufficient coverage on any vehicle delays reinstatement until you correct the coverage gap.

What to Do Before You Pay the Fee

Confirm you completed every requirement the suspension order imposed. Court-ordered alcohol treatment, community service, fines, and restitution must all be satisfied before the Secretary of State will accept your reinstatement fee. If your suspension required a hearing, schedule and complete the hearing first. If your restricted license required ignition interlock, obtain the compliance certification from your BAIID provider.

Verify your insurance policy meets Michigan's minimum requirements for every vehicle you own. Contact your carrier and request a current declaration page showing coverage limits for each car. If any vehicle on the policy carries lower limits, increase the coverage before you attempt to reinstate. The Secretary of State will not process your reinstatement until your proof of insurance satisfies the state minimums across all vehicles.
