Michigan Requires Coverage You Probably Don't Have

You moved to Michigan with valid insurance from another state. Your carrier confirmed your policy is active. But Michigan law does not recognize out-of-state policies as compliant once you establish residency, because the state mandates Personal Injury Protection coverage that most states do not require. Your current policy almost certainly does not include PIP, and your liability limits may fall below Michigan's $50,000 per person, $100,000 per accident, $10,000 property damage floor.

Michigan operates a no-fault insurance system. That means your own policy pays your medical bills and wage loss after an accident, regardless of who caused it. PIP is not optional. Every registered vehicle in Michigan must carry it. If your previous state was a tort state — where the at-fault driver's liability coverage pays your medical bills — your policy structure does not transfer. You must add PIP and confirm your liability limits meet Michigan's statutory floor before you register your vehicles.

Michigan will not register your vehicle without proof of PIP, and your out-of-state policy does not include it.

Michigan Minimum Liability

$50,000 / $100,000 / $10,000

Michigan requires $50,000 bodily injury per person, $100,000 per accident, and $10,000 property damage. These minimums are higher than 38 other states, so transferring residents often discover their existing liability limits are insufficient.

What Personal Injury Protection Actually Covers

PIP pays medical expenses, rehabilitation costs, wage loss up to three years, and replacement services (household tasks you can no longer perform due to injury) after a car accident. It covers you, your passengers, and pedestrians struck by your vehicle. The level you choose determines your premium.

Unlimited PIP was the only option until 2019. Now you can choose a lower cap if you have qualifying health insurance that covers auto injuries. Households with Medicare or Medicaid can select the $50,000 minimum. Your health insurance pays first; PIP covers amounts your health plan does not.

PIP is not the same as medical payments coverage. MedPay is an optional add-on in tort states that covers small medical bills regardless of fault. PIP is mandatory, pays significantly higher amounts, and includes wage loss and services. If your previous policy carried MedPay, that coverage does not satisfy Michigan's PIP requirement.

Michigan will not register your vehicle without proof of PIP. Your out-of-state policy does not include it, so registration and title transfer cannot proceed until you add Michigan-compliant coverage.

How to Add Michigan Coverage Before Registration

You have 45 days from the date you establish Michigan residency to register your vehicles and obtain a Michigan driver license. Registration requires proof of insurance that meets state PIP and liability minimums.

Contact your current carrier first. Many national carriers write policies in Michigan and can convert your existing policy to a Michigan-compliant one. The carrier will add PIP, adjust your liability limits if needed, and re-rate the policy based on your Michigan garaging address. If your carrier does not write in Michigan, you must find a new one. Fifteen carriers write standard and non-standard auto insurance in Michigan, including Allstate, Geico, Progressive, State Farm, Farmers, and USAA. Request quotes from at least three to compare PIP level options and premium.

Bring proof of your previous state's insurance history when you request quotes. Carriers use your claims record and coverage continuity to set rates. If you maintained continuous coverage in your previous state with no lapses, that history transfers. Once you select a carrier and PIP level, the insurer issues an electronic proof of insurance that the Secretary of State's office verifies when you register. Paper insurance cards are not required for registration, but carry one in every vehicle — Michigan law requires drivers to show proof of insurance during traffic stops.

Registering Multiple Vehicles on One Policy

If you own two or more vehicles, every car must appear on a Michigan-compliant policy before you can register any of them. Most carriers require all household vehicles to sit on the same policy to qualify for a multi-car discount. The discount typically reduces the premium for the second and subsequent vehicles by a percentage that varies by carrier. Michigan does not regulate the size of multi-car discounts, so the benefit differs across insurers.

Vehicles titled to different household members can usually share one policy if they are garaged at the same address. Married couples, domestic partners, and related household members typically qualify. Roommates who are not related may need separate policies depending on the carrier's underwriting rules. If one household member has a suspended license or a recent DUI, some carriers will exclude that driver from the policy or require them to carry a separate non-owner policy. Clarify household driver and vehicle structure when you request quotes.

Adding a vehicle mid-term re-rates the entire policy. If you move to Michigan with one car and buy a second after you establish residency, the carrier recalculates the premium for both vehicles when you add the new one. The multi-car discount applies at that point, but the total premium reflects updated rating factors for both cars. Notify your carrier within the grace period stated in your policy — typically 14 to 30 days — to maintain continuous coverage on the newly acquired vehicle.

Michigan Uninsured Motorist Rate

22.3%

More than one in five Michigan drivers operate without insurance. Uninsured motorist coverage is not mandatory in Michigan, but it protects you when an at-fault driver has no liability policy. Consider adding it if your assets exceed the state minimum liability limits.

Choosing a PIP Level That Fits Your Household

Unlimited PIP offers the most protection but costs the most. It pays all reasonable medical expenses and wage loss with no cap. Households with high incomes, self-employment, or family members whose health insurance excludes auto injuries often choose unlimited. The $100,000 and $50,000 minimums are available only if you have qualifying health insurance that covers auto injuries, and you must certify that coverage annually to your insurer.

Your PIP level applies to every vehicle on the policy. If household members have different health insurance situations — one covered by Medicare, another by an employer plan — choose the PIP level that fits the member with the least health coverage. Medicare and Medicaid enrollees can opt for the $50,000 minimum, but other household drivers on the same policy receive the same $50,000 cap unless they carry separate policies.

What Happens If You Register Without Compliant Coverage

Michigan requires electronic insurance verification at registration. The Secretary of State's office queries the insurer's database in real time. If the system returns no active policy or a policy that lacks PIP, registration is denied. You cannot title or plate a vehicle without proof of Michigan-compliant insurance. Attempting to register with an out-of-state policy that does not include PIP fails at the counter.

The Secretary of State suspends your license and registration until you provide proof of insurance and pay reinstatement fees. If you are stopped during the suspension period, the vehicle is impounded. The faster you add Michigan coverage after establishing residency, the less risk you carry of an uninsured-driving citation during the transition window.

Compare Carriers That Write Your Household Structure

Fifteen carriers write auto insurance for Michigan residents with multiple vehicles. Not all of them offer the same PIP levels, multi-car discounts, or household-driver flexibility. Request quotes that reflect your actual household: number of vehicles, number of drivers, each driver's age and violation history, and the PIP level you are considering. Provide your previous state's insurance history to each carrier so they can apply any continuity discount. Compare the total premium for all vehicles together, not per-car rates, because the multi-car discount changes the combined cost in ways that per-vehicle comparisons miss. Once you select a carrier and coverage structure, the insurer files proof electronically with the state, and you can proceed to registration with confidence that your coverage meets Michigan law.
